About YFU Estonia

Youth For Understanding (YFU) is one of the world’s oldest, largest, and most respected international exchange organizations. The birth of the organization dates back to 1951, when Dr. Rachel Andresen wished to offer German students a way to see a different kind of life than of their destructed homeland. She started a student exchange program called Youth For Understanding in the U.S.A. Now YFU involves more than 60 countries all over the world, but the original idea is still the same – the world will be a better place through understanding cultural differences and other ways of living.

In Estonia it all started in 1992 when two Estonians went to Denmark as exchange students to discover the world. In 1993, YFU Estonia was formed and it was the beginning of regular student exchange programs between Estonia and other countries. The first exchange student came to Estonia in 1995 and since then more and more students have decided to spend their exchange year in Estonia.

YFU programs offer Estonians a chance to go see and discover the world during their high school years and a possibility to invite the world to their home, hosting a student for a year. In the last years students from New Zealand, South-Africa, Brazil, USA, Japan, Thailand and various countries in Europe have come to Estonia.

For 2010/2011 we are awaiting more than 30 exchange students from all over the world. Our new partners are Turkey, the Czech Republik and Uruguay. Since 1995 we have hosted more than 150 students from all over the world. This season we will enable around 60 Estonian students to discover the world with YFU.
